The beginning of a Hegelian golden age?

Is Rosen's book the culmination of a golden age of Hegel interpretation in English, or is it, better, just the beginning of such a golden age?

Without question Hegel's Science of Logic is the greatest work produced by modern philosophy. It had been a largely closed work, but in the past 25 years six major commentaries (that I know of) have come out on it in English.

So Rosen enters an ongoing conversation, and, hopefully, he will initiate further conversation.

His book begins with a few of his introductions followed by comments on Hegel's several introductions, etc. for a hundred pages. All this is understandable and interesting, but it is tedious to have to wade through 100 pages just to get started.

There is then a perfectly decent commentary on the three chapters of the Quality section and the first two chapters of the Quantity section. As far as I know, the best commentary on these chapters is in Clark Butler's _Hegel's Logic_ (1996)

Then, although there is a chapter heading for the third chapter of the Quantity section, this chapter is actually skipped completely along with the whole of the Measure section. It is almost as though someone editing the book accidentally misplaced two or three chapters. This material, though, is usually skipped--but usually it will receive at least some comment. The only work that I know of that deals with these chapters is David Gray Carlson's _A Commentary to Hegel's Science of Logic_ (2007).

Then Rosen deals with the first section of the Doctrine of Essence. This is the part of the SL that he dealt with in his first Hegel book from 1974. The commentary on the first two chapters is about 100 pages, largely repeating what he wrote in the earlier work. That this commentary is SO long seems to be due to the same editor who misplaced the earlier few chapters. He seems to have forgotten to edit this part all together. So at this point the book is beginning to look questionable. But then the miracle happens.

Rosen devotes two chapters and 40 pages to the Ground chapter of the SL. This is the heart and soul of the whole book. These chapters are worth the price of the book by themselves. These well edited chapters are lively, interesting, and fully engaged with Hegel's text.

Here, by the way, Rosen first introduces his main complaint about the SL. As he expresses it on page 345: "But what is still unexplained (and will be from start to finish) is the particular form or look of the Sache as this existing or appearing thing."

Then there are two chapters and forty pages devoted to the final 6 chapters of the Doctrine of Essence. These also are very interesting and very well written.

In most commentaries the Doctrine of Essence is just skimmed over lightly. But with Rosen this is the most important part of his book--and this is, as far as I know, the best commentary available on the Doctrine of Essence.

Rosen's dealing with the concept/judgment/syllogism is not very interesting. Perhaps he knows TOO much about logic. By far and away the best commentary on these three chapters is in Richard Dien Winfield's _Hegel's Science of Logic_ (2012).

So then Rosen finishes off briefly but competently with the final 6 chapters of the Doctrine of the Concept. The best commentary on these chapters that I know of is in Herbert Marcuse's _Hegel's Ontology and the Theory of Historicity_ (1932, ET 1987)

For people who are, so to speak, at ground zero with Hegel, knowing nothing about him, probably the best introduction to the SL would be Robert M. Wallace's _Hegel's Philosophy of Reality, Freedom, and God_ (2005).

One suggestion that the conversation about Hegel is just getting off the ground, might be Zizek's recent very big book about Hegel (though not about the SL): _Less than Nothing_ (2012), subtitled "Hegel and the shadow of dialectical materialism". This might be what Rosen is referring to on page 489 when he writes: "Fairness requires me to balance the Hegelian criticism of postmodernism in the text with the suggestion that the verbal fecundity of postmodernism, with the accompanying dissolution of analytical philosophy, may well be a sign of a forthcoming return to what Hegel would have regarded as a more serious version of philosophy".

Finally someone is paying due attention to Hegel's Logic.

There are very few people in the US who spend the necessary time to read Hegel's Logic even though Hegel's system is incomprehensible without spending the time reading the Logic, Philosophy of Nature and the Philosophy of Spirit.

Internet trolls live to upset as many people as possible, using all the technical and psychological tools at their disposal. They take pleasure in ruining a complete stranger's day and find amusement in their victim's anguish. In short, trolling is the obstacle to a kinder, gentler Internet. To quote a famous Internet meme, trolling is why we can't have nice things online. Or at least that's what we have been led to believe. In this provocative book, Whitney Phillips argues that trolling, widely condemned as obscene and deviant, actually fits comfortably within the contemporary media landscape. Trolling may be obscene, but, Phillips argues, it isn't all that deviant. Trolls' actions are born of and fueled by culturally sanctioned impulses -- which are just as damaging as the trolls' most disruptive behaviors. Phillips describes, for example, the relationship between trolling and sensationalist corporate media -- pointing out that for trolls, exploitation is a leisure activity; for media, it's a business strategy. She shows how trolls, "the grimacing poster children for a socially networked world," align with social media. And she documents how trolls, in addition to parroting media tropes, also offer a grotesque pantomime of dominant cultural tropes, including gendered notions of dominance and success and an ideology of entitlement. Use This Book as a Tool

A tool for understanding trolls -- one of the most prominent and disturbing groups of people on the internet. An exhaustive study by Whitney Phillips exposes the roots of the troll space and follows trolling through its early, middle, and late iterations. Phillips explains the origins of many different memes and their importance to trolling, information which is useful in spotting and dealing with trolling behaviors online.

The main argument of the book is that trolls are irrevocably linked to mainstream culture, that they are an exaggerated instance of the worst of the mainstream --and the media in particular. Because of this, Phillips doesn't believe trolls can be stopped, not until massive cultural overhaul is made. She says herself that she's been accused of being an apologist for trolls, and it is true that the tone of the book sometimes skirts toward troll sympathizing. Though, overall it is still a very readable, and useable resource. A recommended read for anyone who wants to better understand the internet, especially its wicked underbelly (4chan /b/ specifically).

Socrates was the original troll, and other internet revalations

I found this book after reading the author's excellent op Ed about Donald Trump. The book didn't disappoint. It is a model for how to do rigorous and accessible scholarship on media, and I found it's underlying argument soberly compelling: troll space isn't the antithesis of mainstream American values, but an extreme expression of them. Anyone trying to understand the disturbing dynamic of American politics at present could benefit from this book.

Good basic color manual

There are many good things about this book, but what I mainly use it for are the color charts in the back of the book, in order to create my own colors. At the same time, the book is well worth reading. Examples of color theory, that is, what color goes with which, are provided so that you see it in action, so to speak, not only in side by side examples, but in some famous...and not so famous...artwork. As well, examples are provided from nature. Further, flesh color examples are provided...with the name of the paint they are referring to. They show a Van Gogh painting where he used almost nothing but red and green to paint the face. Gray, white and black are explained, sometimes tough subject matter for artists. And if that weren't enough, there is shown the difference between, for example, burnt umber by Golden, by Liquitex, and by other brands. They are very different! This is a book worth having, worth reading and worth referring to. If you are an artist, get it!

Man this is a great book. My wife is into painting, and she borrowed a copy from her sister, and when I saw it, I really wanted one for myself, since I am a klutz with color. It explains every aspect of combining various paints to get the colors you want. It is very thorough and a big book. Well worth the modest price.

This is the type of book that you start reading and don't put down until you are at the end. While giving out a wealth of information, you are not overwhelmed with too much to fast. And what you do learn is very understandable and giving to you in such a manner that it is very easy to remember. This book brought key elements that I have heard of in several different books, but that I had not been able to connect the dots.

About the Author
Matt Furey is the author of several best-selling books, including Combat Conditioning, 101 Ways to Magnetize Money, The Unbeatable Man and his latest, greatest book, Expect to Win Hate to Lose. When Matt was eight years old he began competing in swimming and wrestling and through dedicated practice became a champion in each. His prowess in wrestling, however, took center stage when he attracted the attention of Olympic Gold Medalist Dan Gable, the head coach at the University of Iowa, who guided the Iowa team to 15 NCAA team titles in 21 seasons. Being on the Iowa team was akin to being a member of an underground group of high-achievers where you gained secret access to the success principles, keys, strategies and tactics that most of humanity will never hear about. After winning a national title in college, Furey moved to California where he began studying various martial arts. In these arts he immediately saw the physical, mental and philosophical links these arts had with other sports, and this lead to the publication of his first book and DVDs in 1996, entitled, The Martial Art of Wrestling. Also in 1996, Furey began competing in kung fu. Nearly two years later, after winning national titles in the art, he went to Beijing, China, and became the first American to win a gold medal their in a world championship. I stood up and started to work- this is an effective book

Hi fellow readers and reviewers.

I believe every book can create different feelings in each reader. The former reviewer seems to know Fureys` work better than I do. Having read Jim Rohn, Brian Tracy and others, this book was the only one that motivated me to start to work. I just could see the logic of not doing the work, or completing a half hearted work.

Thanks to Frey- this is not me anymore. Although I am not a martial arts fan, I loved the anecdotes from martial arts, and somehow they were all relevant to my work and life. The middle part of the book is where it gets better, and towards end, you may stop reading the book and be so motivated so that you cannot wait to work on your dreams.

Thank you Matt Furey- if you ever read this review. And if I have any children, I believe you have thought me some good parenting ideas as well.

Matt Furey tells his life in this book. I really enjoy when an author walks their talk. The photos are inspiring. The ancient wisdom shared are inspiring. How nice that he could take a group of his newsletters and put them together to form a book of publishable quality. Expect to Win-Hate to lose will definitely help you sharpen your mental game to be a high achiever if you stick with it.

About the Author
Professor Olubayi Olubayi grew up in Kenya. He divides his time among Kenya, South Africa and the United States. He is the co-founder of the Global Literacy Project, PAMLO, and several other organizations. He earned his Ph.D. in Biology from Rutgers University, and has taught microbiology, protein purification, biotechnology, general biology, the roles of Africans in science, a seminar on wealth and a seminar on education for a better world at Rutgers University, NJ, USA and at Middlesex County College, NJ, USA. As an advocate of inter-disciplinary education, he has a USA research patent on flocculation of bacteria, and refereed publications on a wide range of subjects including: bacterial physiology, plant physiology, the place of science in Africana studies and the emerging national culture of Kenya. He is a member of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and he is listed in the 2011 "Who's Who" in America. He is an adviser to youth, teachers and government officials in Kenya, South Africa and the USA on matters of education, sustainability and global citizenship. Prof. Olubayi is currently working on an ambitious model school based on a curriculum for sustainable villages and cities in Africa.

Illuminating the World of Education...

As educators, our job is to inspire the mind as well as the heart. Education for a Better World by Olubayi Olubayi, focuses on ways in which we teach others to master their own vision of success, the birth of education. Most important is the concept that we are, all of us, experiential learners and we absorb information through multiple senses, simultaneously. If this is how we learn best, then what better way to teach?

Education for a Better World is a call to action for all those interested in becoming part of the global community of true educators and learners. Dr. Olubayi correctly professes the belief that education through service learning reaches far beyond the classroom walls and into the lives of all who are touched by it.

Dr. Olubayi's perspective is all encompassing; his vision of how we become, and remain, life long learners is authentic, interdisciplinary, and altruistic. Although his expression of global education is seemingly vast, it is also uniquely local. His ideals can be applied to international relations as easily as community relations.

Thank you, Dr. Olubayi, for illuminating the world of education through reflection and practice.

This book is a reality check and a must read for anyone who is interested in making a difference.It is informative, educational, inspiring and entertaining. It is also an easy read and an eye opener. The concept is universal and can be applied by anyone. Olubayi is an unsung hero.

Unbelievable quality for the price!

SPECIAL NOTE: For U.S. customers purchasing the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, you will notice the text has NOT been converted to the "Americanized" version of the original U.S. releases (with the exception of changing all "Philosopher's Stone" mentions to "Sorcerer's Stone"). So far, I have noticed the following: (EU/US) dialling / dialing; Shan't! / Won't!; sherbet lemon / lemon drop; motorbike / motorcycle; and dustbin / trashcan. For many purists of the series who never liked the idea of modifying the original text for an American audience, this is a good thing. Good or bad is naturally for each reader to decide--just know, if you plan to read the books while listening to Jim Dale's audiobooks, you'll notice a few superficial differences.

The quality of this new illustrated edition is phenomenal. I've been excited about the release of this book since it was announced, but I never expected the book as a whole to be so well crafted.

A couple of things to note:
1. Underneath the book jacket, the novel is bound in a sturdy red hardback with gold lettering on the spine.
2. The paper is thick with an eggshell glossy finish.
3. All chapter intros are illustrated.
4. Some images take up full pages or multiple pages. Most illustrations share the page with text.
5. Every inch of the book is illustrated or decorated in some fashion. There are NO white pages in the book. Even the pages without large illustrations have the paper printed and marked with ink blots or paper "stains".

I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to read the series (again, or for the first time), especially if you plan to read this with someone younger. If this book is a demonstration of what is to come with the illustrated editions for the rest of the series, we're all in for six more impeccable treats.

Beautiful Book but mine's already falling apart ;-(

The book itself and illustrations are absolutely, incredibly extraordinary. In that way, this is 100% a 10-STAR book and is absolutely to die for for Harry Potter fans. I was ravenous to get my hands on my copy as soon as it was delivered this morning, but was quickly disappointed.

First, Amazon's packaging was utterly and despicably inadequate. (See Photo) My book was shipped in a box, with *no packing material* of any kind. At first glance, it seemed OK. But when I took a close look at my dust jacket, I was extremely upset to find that the gold foil lettering for "Harry Potter" had been rubbed away and destroyed completely in some places leaving ugly, black matte in its place-- pock marking the otherwise handsome gold lettering. Also, the matte-finish of the dust jacket had been rubbed so badly due to the bad packaging that it left scars and shiny markings where the matte finish was worn off. For an obvious gift/collectors item, this is absolutely unacceptable. I called Amazon and they didn't seem to "get" what my fuss was all about and just offered to ship a replacement which, undoubtedly, will be shipped in exactly the same way.

Second, after I got over my initial outrage over the shipping/packaging. I sat down to enjoy the actual book itself, which as I said is absolutely extraordinary! I was extremely cautious handling the book and binding, being unsure how tolerant the binding is of weight. I carefully opened both the right and left sides of the binding and supported the weight of the opened cover using a small pillow. By the time I reached the back 3/4th of the book (on Professor McGonagall's full page illustration) the binding separated from the spine the very first time I turned the page. In other words, the binding fell apart during my very first pass through the book. (See Photo). Another thing that really drove me crazy was the way that the stitched in book mark was carelessly folded into the book. It left dents all over my pages (See Photo), which of course had to be on a full page illustration of Hagrid!

Needless to say I'm in awe how Bloomsbury has managed to put together such an incredible project, with JK Rowling's remarkable literature and Jim Kay's otherworldly illustrations-- and allowed it to be put together in a low quality binding! I noticed that all of the previous Harry Potter books were printed and bound in USA (some in Mexico) but this book was printed and bound in China. I would like to hope that they would quality check a thing like this, but perhaps not. Either way, I am extremely disappointed in the quality/binding of my book. I would be interested to know if others are seeing the same thing. And please, Amazon, pack these books in bubble wrap and packing material! Not all alone in a box...

Update (October 9th): I have finally received my new book and it was in much, much better condition. The cover and spine were tight, intact and falling apart from the binding like my original copy. Addtl photos to follow...

Big and beautiful

The numerous illustrations are a wonderful addition to a brilliant book and will bring the story to life for young readers just growing into the series. Be aware, however, that books in this new illustrated series are quite substantial in size and weight, with pages so wide that column format is used for the text. I imagine that later books in the series will rival encyclopedias. Prepare your bookshelf accordingly.

eye opener!!!!!!!!!

I want to thank God for annointing Terri to write such a profound book. The book is straight up and truth and based strictly off the WORD! I had been searching for an answer as to why i feel the way feel and the reason why i cant seem to break free from this man ( not knowing what a soul tie truly was before reading this book). This book has opened my eyes and actually tells you what you need to do to be free once and for all... God truly answers prayers and is ALWAYS on time!!!! Thank you again Terri and God Bless You!!!

I choose 5stars for this because it is just that ans more. This book has shown in a very simple way how to concor something that we all go through yet we always feel so along in the process. I would recommend this book to anyone who is having a difficult to in letting go of their bad soul tie. It is so necessary.

This book is simply a repeat of it along with some extra info that isn't really pertinent to the subject at hand. This is in no way meant to disparage the author, I'm just saying get the info for free on her website and YouTube.

Great Society Quick Reference for Players and GMs Alike

For a while I was in charge of running Pathfinder Society games at my local store. The Pathfinder Society Primer came in handy on multiple occasions. It specifically helped new players who had never played and wanted to get involved in events. I also often used the maps and the descriptions/bonuses from he lodges to add more flavor and depth to our Society Games.

While this isn't a complete overview of everything in Pathfinder Society it definitely acts as a quick reference guide to help out myself as the game master and the players. If you are a player looking to get involved this book is great way to start learning. If you are a game master who is running society games then this is a great resource to help new players.
