About the Author
Richard L. Epstein received his B.A. summa cum laude at the University of Pennsylvania and his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. He held a postdoctoral fellowship in mathematics and philosophy at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, before an extensive career teaching mathematics and philosophy. He has been a Fulbright Scholar to Brazil and a National Academy of Sciences Scholar to Poland. He also owned and managed the Dog & Duck Coffee House. He is the author of the series of research texts THE SEMANTIC FOUNDATIONS OF LOGIC as well as CRITICAL THINKING and FIVE WAYS OF SAYING "THEREFORE." Currently he is head of the Advanced Reasoning Forum in Socorro, New Mexico.
Carolyn Kernberger received her B.G.S. cum laude from New Mexico Tech and her M.A. in teaching English as a second language at the University of New Mexico. She has taught in the United States, Japan, and at the College of Micronesia FSM, where she was also the Accreditation Officer.

A Boring Book, Master of Obvious, and Anecdotal

This book does a poor job at teaching and dissecting critical thinking. "Critical thinking is reasoning well," the author defines in the Preface; it is so much more. This book is filled with anecdotes and quick one liners to show what is critical thinking and it completely ignores context, such as who the speaker might be, who the audience is, what the objectives are, and how human emotions play a part.
I'm not going to completely dissect how this book is not worth your time...simply because I don't have the time. Many of its lessons are overly obvious one liners. If you have to read it, skim quickly. Other than that, this book is a waste of time and your $$.

Some great explanations clouded by ideological thinking

I work in a field that relies heavily on logical analysis and was very interested to read Dr. Epstein's book when it was assigned for a graduate course I am taking. Dr. Epstein's technique is to offer a short summary of a concept used in critical thinking then to offer a list of examples to attempt to clarify that concept to the reader. His approach is excellent as are some of the examples.
Unfortunately, Dr. Epstein couldn't resist including slanted political statements without logical support in some of his examples. As such, he undercuts the need for well supported argument and the consideration of opposing premises and shows a profound lack of application of the very critical thinking skills he wishes to teach. For example, he claims on page 40 the arguments in support of allowing firearms to be carried in restaurants are invalid under the "reducing to the absurd" principle. His example argument is that allowing individuals to carry a firearm in a restaurant is the same as allowing them to carry firearms in court, in political offices, in high schools, etc. This argument is premised on the concept that restaurants are identical (or at least substantially similar) to each of those other locations, whereas key differences exist. In court, there is generally armed security present and the primary reason one would carry a firearm (self defense) is thus less relevant. In high schools, the majority present are too young to have the right to carry a firearm at all. In this and many other examples, Dr. Epstein conveniently ignores facts that don't agree with a particular worldview and, in doing so, does a poor job of explaining some concepts in the book.
This is not, and should not be, a political book at all. If Dr. Epstein were to remove the ideologically motivated passages and replace them with the generic examples used elsewhere, this book would be a reasonably good text on critical thinking. As is, I cannot recommend it.
