From School Library Journal
Grade 6 Up. This compelling collection features confident storytelling and surprise endings. Modern technology merges with fantasy in the title story. Cheapskate Bill Essler dumps Denise Bainbridge as his graduation-dance date so he doesn't have to spend his money on her. Furious when she then humiliates him in front of the entire school, he discovers a new computer web site, Curses, Inc., and chooses from a menu of spells to make Denise's life miserable. However, the curses never seem to have their desired effect and Bill's bank account quickly dwindles. Other selections include a hilarious take on what might happen if humans could understand animals but animals still couldn't understand humans; meditations on vanity; and the moral question of whether or not it is right to take the life of someone who took yours?if you were raised from the dead. A strong theme of morality and making choices runs throughout the book. "Witch-Hunt," a fable about censorship, is sure to promote discussion. Vande Velde skillfully deceives readers into thinking that the story is taking place in the distant past, making the twist at the end all the more relevant. The author writes about her inspiration for each tale in a short afterword, giving teens insight into the perennial question, "Where do you get your ideas?" This will be a hot choice for YAs and can be easily booktalked off the shelves.?Tim Wadham, Dallas Public Library, TX

From Kirkus Reviews
An uneven collection of ten short stories by Vande Velde (Tales from the Brothers Grimm and the Sisters Weird, 1995, etc.) that treats spell-casting in modern, historical, and timeless settings. The title story is a breezy computer tale, in which eighth- grader Bill outrages a girl by uninviting her to a dance at the last minute. Her subsequent treatment of him inspires him to order a curse from an on-line service that will cause her dog to be lost for a period of time for a fee. That curse, and each successive one, benefits her more, until a neat twist brings the clever tale to a close. Another ambitious tale, ``The Witch's Son,'' set in the time of the American Revolution, is well drawn and poignant, but suffers a weak ending. ``Remember Me,'' a strong story, presents food for thought about the link between memory and identity, and then backs away from a satisfying conclusion. The stories are least effective when imitating folk tales, and most effective when both plot and setting are vital enough to make an impression. Vande Velde is often amusing, and fans of the previous book will be entertained by this one, but an introduction and afterword about how the book came to be, who gave it a title, and where ideas come from sound superfluous and indulgent. Magically twisted short stories sure to please 'Potter' fans
By Jake
These wonderful short stories are twisted, enjoyable fast reads that no Harry Potter fan should miss while waiting for book five to arrive. It has all kinds of witty witch stories, from the truly scary "Lost Soul" and "Past Sunset" to the laugh-out-loud funny "To Converse With the Dumb Beasts" and "Boy Witch." The off-the-wall fantasies engross readers from the beginning and don't let go even after the last page is turned. The forward and afterword from the author explaining her insperation and the collection's title are interesting, but don't add anything to the book and are at times bland, the reason this book only gets four stars. Still, they're not bad and you shouldn't skip them, especially if you become a fan of the book. All in all, a collection of short stories you won't want to pass up. Great, and highly reccomended!

A Terrific Collection of Short Stories
By A Customer
I am a 13 year old, and Im pretty new to short stories, but after I found this great book at my bookstore, I knew I was hooked. The title story is hilarious, and has a great ending. Vande Velde has a great sense for making funny, spooky, kooky and intelligent short stories, yet doesnt bore you or overdose on gore. I loved this book, and Ill be sure to get other books from Vivian Vabde Velde!

wow.
By A Customer
At first I couldn't stand how these stories end, but then I realized that if they ended the way I wished they would, they wouldn't be half as interesting or as thought-provoking. It would just be a well told, cliched archetype we've all heard a million times.
Fives points to Vivian Vande Velde for another awesome book!

Best Solaris 11 Guide
By William King
If you are a beginner to Solaris, an old-timer who wants a concise book on what is new to the OS or a person just preparing for the exam: this is the Solaris book for you.

As an IT administrator of a UNIX and Windows environment, I look for a book that gets me in to the material quickly, explains the "whys" and other questions that I may have, and provides abundant material and assistance for taking the test.

This book exceeds in every account.
1. Information quickly: Just as Solaris does not have a lot of fluff, this book is the same. Straight and to the point in a very conversational manner.

2. Why and other question: The author jumps right into the material and seems to have struggled upon your behalf to get to the meat of the subject so as to not waste your time. You are empowered by understanding the tasks and concepts which will ensure that you are not just a trained monkey typing commands without knowing the reasons why.

3. Exam preparation: As stated above this is a concise presentation of the OS. The book is setup to hit the Certification Objectives, provides self-test and drills. There is a DVD providing Interactive Study Tools and pdf of the book to study off of one's smart device.

I highly encourage you to get this book. It will immediately be put to good use and not a paperweight or doorstop or monitor stand. This information is great to know to assist you to do your job in general and to assist you in the exam.

Didn't help prepare for the test at all
By Jman
Bought the book with hopes of reading it and taking the test. Also took the class from Oracle. Neither the book or the class even remotely prepare you for the test. There are many things asked on the test that are not covered in the book nor in the class. Highly disappointed.

Update your UNIX/Solaris Admin Skills
By Harry J. Foxwell, PhD
BIG DISCLAIMER:

I am an Oracle employee (15y@SUN, 3y@Oracle, specializing in Solaris);
I have contributed to the development of the Solaris 11 OCP exam,
and am one of the coauthors of the other Oracle Press Solaris 11
book: Oracle Solaris 11 System Administration: The Complete Reference
Oracle Solaris 11 System Administration The Complete Reference
So, keeping in mind my potential(!) bias and background, here are
some comments about Michael Ernests's OCA Oracle Solaris 11 System
Administration Exam Guide.

The exam being referenced is the first in the Solaris certification
series, and is fairly basic. The more rigorous test is the Solaris
OCP, directed at more experienced Solaris admins. So, the focus
of Ernest's book, as with the book I coauthored, is really the
developing system admin who is learning Solaris 11 perhaps for the
first time. Some UNIX-related experience is assumed, which could
come from working with Linux, AIX, or HP-UX.

Both books were written by authors who used Solaris 11 for x86 for
most of the examples; not much detail is given in either book about
Solaris 11 on SPARC servers. This is generally not a problem for
learning about key Solaris technologies like SMF, ZFS, IPS, zones,
DTrace, and UNIX basics, etc, since these are essential the same
across both x86 and SPARC platforms. The reason for this is that
the authors generally did not have direct access to Oracle's current
SPARC servers. So, in both books, the treatment of booting and
installation on SPARC systems is fairly light. And, yes, nearly
all Solaris admins, new and old, encounter SPARC systems far more
frequently than x86.

The structure of Ernest's book's chapters follows a useful pattern
for learning, with presentation, screenshots, and examples, followed
by brief drills, self tests, and answers to the self-tests. The
chapters are not in any specific order and are essentially
self-contained; use the index to refer to the sections you need to
review, but definitely review the entire book if you intend to take
the OCA test. Further, be sure to try the commands listed in the
book, read their 'man' pages, and study the relevant sections of
the Oracle Solaris 11 Information Library at
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E26502_01/.

If you are getting started adding Solaris 11 admin credentials to
your expertise, frankly, I would recommend both books (please, no
flames!). The "Complete Reference" book covered very little about
Solaris 11 networking, in particular the dladm and ipadm commands
nor the important topic of network virtualization (vnics). Ernest's
book does cover these adequately for both the exam and for general
learning.

Again, admitting my bias, I must say that in spite of what you might
hear to the contrary from Oracle competitors or ill-informed industry
analysts, Solaris on SPARC and on x86 has a long and bright future
and roadmap, and I expect that you'll be seeing more of it in your
data centers now that Oracle has released extremely competitive
servers based on the new SPARC T5 and M5 processors. This means
that you should update your knowledge and admin qualifications about
Solaris; the new Oracle Press books, along with some practice, will
certainly help you with that task.

Ancient Science Through the Golden Age of Greece, by George Sarton

"There are few scholars or scientists today who write as beautifully or as interestingly as [Sarton] . . . [his] book is magnificent." — Ashley Montagu, Saturday Review
Although science did not begin in ancient Greece (millennia of work in Egypt, Mesopotamia, and other regions preceded Greek efforts) it is nevertheless true that methodic, rational investigation of the natural universe originated largely with early Hellenic thinkers. Thus, the major part of this book is of necessity devoted to Greece. Drawing wherever possible on original sources, Dr. Sarton, one of the world's foremost historians of science, paints a vivid and illuminating picture of mathematics, astronomy, physics, biology, medicine, and other sciences as they emerged from the mists of prehistory and ultimately flourished within the context of Greek society. The book is divided into three parts. Part One begins with the earliest evidence of prehistoric mathematics, astronomy, and other science. Dr. Sarton then describes the achievements of Egypt and Mesopotamia, the dawn of Greek culture and the remarkable flowering of Ionian science in the sixth century B.C. Thales of Miletos, Anaximandrox, and Xenophanes are among the important figures discussed. An entire chapter focuses on the influential doctrines of Pythagoras.Part Two opens with the glory of Athens in the fifth century B.C. and its magnificent achievements in poetry and the arts, philosophy, and science. Described in lucid detail are groundbreaking contributions of Heracleitos, Anaxagoras, Protagoras, Zenon of Elea, Parmenides, Democritos, and many others. Also included in this section are perceptive discussions of geographers and historians of the fifth century (Herodotos, Thucydides, and others) and Greek medicine of the fifth century (chiefly Hippocratic).
Part Three focuses on the extraordinary Greek thinkers of the fourth century B.C.: Plato and the Academy, Aristotle, Xenophon and many others, including such important schools of thought as the cynics, stoics, skeptics, and epicureans. Major attention is given to mathematics, astronomy and physics, natural sciences and medicine, Aristotelian humanities, and historiography and other topics.
"Of great value to the general historian and an exciting, arresting story for the lay reader. — The Yale Review

A polished gem
By Andre Oosterman
I bought this book six years ago and have kept it within reach ever since. Open it up at a random page and you will find a gem of an essay on Babylonian astronomy, mummification techniques, the first etnographer, or urban planning in ancient Greece. Sarton has managed to compress more than thirty centuries of scientific history in 600 pages without becoming superficial. He starts with the Babylonians and ends with the ancient Greeks. Nothing is omitted. You will read about astronomy, astrology, biology, mathematics, literature, history, crafts, technical achievements, etnography, trade and economics, mining, government organization, law, medicine, animal husbandry, and - of course - philosophy.
George Sarton writes balanced, with authority and clarity, but first and foremost with great love for his subject. His view is balanced and spiced with an enormous number of delightful details. Did you know that the first Greek colonists brought an urban planner with them? Or that citizens of Athens received a tax credit in 473BC because of a windfall in mining revenues? The Egyptian scientist who got it wrong but asked the right question will have Sarton's sympathy. The Greek philosopher who made his name by reycling ideas stolen from the Babylonians is condemned.
I should stop writing before I get carried away. Let me say one more thing: it is truly astonishing that this book has not become an instant bestseller.

o for six stars
By Richard I. Pervo
Read this in 1973 preparing for exams. admired it then. Reading it now at leisure and mainly for myself, i am astonished. This, in addition to an all but unimaginable breadth of research and scope of coverage, is a monument of a kind of humanistic learning now passing away. Everyone would profit from the introduction and a chapter or two. S. wrote with great honesty and sympathy. Rather than list matters about which Aristotle was wrong or where he has been superseded (news flash!) S. shows what he accomplished, e.g. This great work of humane erudition places us on a scientific journey rather than atop a ladder of outmoded theory, erroneous facts, superstition, and the like.
this could be required learning for the entire world.

In this book, the author has built a biblical doctrine of discipleship, showing that to become a disciple one must receive a knowledge of divine truth, believe the Person presenting the truth and then completely commit himself to the One presented. He then goes on to show the requirements the Lord Jesus Christ makes upon those who become his disciples so that they may live as His disciples. ~ From front flap.

It offers educators a roadmap for successfully promoting adolescents' comprehension, vocabulary development, and independent learning. The second edition responds to the enormous wave of change brought about by the CCSS. Bean, PhD, Department of Teaching and Learning, Old Dominion University

It reflects a commitment to providing students with high-quality instruction and equal access in all content areas--not just to meet current mandates, but to develop their critical thinking skills. As a leader committed to urban education, I find this book a valuable resource."--Margaret Morone-Wilson, MS, Director of Professional Development, Syracuse (New York) City School District

"In this second edition, you will find our best scholars addressing the most important issues and describing the most powerful instructional practices being used in secondary classrooms today. This volume continues to be one of the finest texts for teacher education and professional development in adolescent literacy. At a time when the contexts for literacy and literacy education have become complex and sometimes confusing, this book provides needed direction for us all."--Donald J. Leu, PhD, John and Maria Neag Endowed Chair in Literacy and Technology, University of Connecticut

"Secondary school teachers and curriculum coordinators are scouring the pedagogical landscape looking for resources like this one. The second edition offers insightful suggestions that will help us support our students in close reading of increasingly complex texts that incorporate challenging academic vocabulary. Great essays with greats references!
By M. Garcia
I am loving this book. The chapters aren't really chapters but essays, so feel free to read out of order. I feel way more prepared to be a better teacher because of this book. I just wish they would include a little more of the references they refer to in the actual essays, but at least they list the references at the end of each chapter so you can check them out and be informed.

A treasure !
By André Gargoura
Masterful treatment of Non-Euclidean concepts, including a rare "tour de force", i.e. a comprehensive and in-depth treatment of both hyperbolic and elliptic geometries.

But beware, the book is difficult, highly abstract, with almost no figures and spiced with some quaternions and tensors (which may be taken in a cursory manner...).

So, it's better to absorb first Coxeter's "The Real Projective Plane" and Greenberg's "Euclidean & Non-Euclidean Geometries" , and only then tackle this book.

This book is part of Coxeter's geometry SUM : Introduction to Geometry, The real Projective Plane, Projective Geometry, Geometry Revisited, Non-Euclidean Geometry... to be included in the collection of anyone interested in mathematics.

The beauty of geometry is captured
By A Customer
Originally published in 1942, this book has lost none of its power in the last half century. It is a commentary on the recent demise of geometry in many curricula that 33 years elapsed between the publication of the fifth and sixth editions. Fortunately, like so many things in the world, trends in mathematics are cyclic, and one can hope that the geometric cycle is on the rise. We in mathematics owe so much to geometry. It is generally conceded that much of the origins of mathematics is due to the simple necessity of maintaining accurate plots in settlements. The only book from the ancient history of mathematics that all mathematicians have heard of is the Elements by Euclid. It is one of the most read books of all time, arguably the only book without a religious theme still in widespread use over 2000 years after the publication of the first edition. The geometry taught in high schools today is with only minor modifications found in the Euclidean classic.
There are other reasons why geometry should occupy a special place in our hearts. Most of the principles of the axiomatic method, the concept of the theorem and many of the techniques used in proofs were born and nurtured in the cradle of geometry. For many centuries, it was nearly an act of faith that all of geometry was Euclidean. That annoying fifth postulate seemed so out of place and yet it could not be made to go away. Many tried to remove it, but finally the Holmsean dictum of ,"once you have eliminated the impossible, what is left, not matter how improbable, must be true", had to be admitted. There were in fact three geometries, all of which are of equal validity. The other two, elliptic and hyperbolic, are the main topics of this wonderful book.
Coxeter is arguably the best geometer of this century but there can be no argument that he is the best explainer of geometry of this century. While fifty years is a mere spasm compared to the time since Euclid, it is certainly possible that students will be reading Coxeter far into the future with the same appreciation that we have when we read Euclid. His explanations of the non-Euclidean geometries is so clear that one cannot help but absorb the essentials. In so many ways, Euclidean geometry is but the middle way between the two other geometries. A point well made and in great detail by Coxeter.
Geometry is a jewel that was born on the banks of the Nile river and we should treasure and respect it as the seed from which so much of our basic reasoning processes sprouted. For this reason, you should buy this book and keep a copy on your shelf.

Projective geometry is his foundation
By Marvin J. Greenberg
In my own geometry text, I only mentioned results in elliptic geometry in passing, because they did not fit in to Hilbert's axiomatic approach, which is the closest in spirit to Euclid's.

Coxeter, by contrast, takes projective geometry as his starting point. The beginning of his book is devoted to that. When the additional structure of a distinguished non-degenerate conic C (the "absolute") is assumed, one obtains real plane hyperbolic geometry if C is real or real plane elliptic geometry if C is imaginary. Thus a very pretty unification is achieved.

In three dimensions, C is taken to be a non-degenerate quadric surface. Three dimensional elliptic space has the new phenomenon of Clifford parallel lines - difficult to visualize.

Great content; poor editing
By Tyrannosauron
First, an initial statement of possible sources of bias: I am a professional academic and an unapologetic LOST enthusiast (you may read what you like into that conjunction). I ordered the LOST Encyclopedia on May 4 and received it on October 12 following a delay from its original listed release date of August 24, so I've been anticipating its release for a while.

Second, an executive summary: as a fan of the show, I'm glad to finally have this "encyclopedia" on my bookshelf and think it an excellent resource. Nevertheless, the presentation of the book is somewhat less polished than I would have hoped, leading me to suspect that a second edition may be in the works. Any recommendation that I can give would therefore have to be a guarded one.

Like the show for which it serves as a reference guide, this book must have been a massive undertaking for everyone involved with little guarantee of pleasing everyone in its audience. I can therefore forgive the omission of some items (no entry for the Hybird, or "Hurley bird," for example) and the lack of linked entries (e.g. "The Hatch: see Swan Station," or "Jeremy Bentham: see John Locke").

My objections to the book's editing begin with the character entries, which are generally sorted alphabetically by first name. I have no problem with organizing an encyclopedia in this way, as this is hardly an academic text and there are a variety of minor characters whose last names are unknown; however, the glaring exceptions to this rule--John Locke, whose entry is filed under "L," and James Ford, whose entry is filed under "S" for "Sawyer"--happen to be among the most important entries in the volume. Finding those entries will only take an extra few seconds of the reader's time (especially since, as mentioned above, there are no linking entries), but the organization comes across as sloppy.

Also sloppy are the various textual redundancies. In the "Man in Black" entry, for example, a text blurb entitled "Jacob's Spirit" calls attention to the fact that "The spirit of a young Jacob repeatedly appeared to the Man in Black while he was acting out his end game as Locke..." One page later, immediately facing that blurb, is another blurb entitled "Haunting Reminders" which calls attention to the very same fact using the very same text, the only difference being in the capitalization of a single word. Similarly, the entry for Magnus Hanso ends with a three-sentence paragraph: the first sentence states that "Hanso's death remained a mystery to the outside world [until] DHARMA Initiative member Stuart Radzinsky documented Hanso's final resting place on the Blast Wall Map"; the second sentence states that "Details of Hanso's death remained a mystery to the outside world"; the third sentence states that (you guessed it) "DHARMA Initiative member Stuart Radzinsky documented Hanso's final resting place on the blast wall map." Again, this book constitutes a relatively massive undertaking and it's understandable that various typos would slip through (and there are a number of those), but given the two-month delay in the book's release I would have expected the editors to catch these obvious artifacts of the rewriting process.

I had initially speculated that the publication delay was a function of the writers' need to rewrite some entries in light of the final episode's controversial revelations regarding the "flash-sideways universe." That was apparently incorrect, as the only reference to the flash-sideways (that I've found, at least) comes at the tail end of Juliet's entry. Instead, all information about that "universe" is relegated to a few text-light and picture-heavy character entries that follow the encyclopedia's index. The entries seem arbitrarily organized (in order: Desmond, Hurley, Ben, Sun, Jin, Sayid, Kate, Claire, Locke, and Jack) and utterly disconnected from the rest of the encyclopedia. To the writers' credit, they call attention to some quotes from the final episode that should help confused viewers figure out where the flash-sideways universe fits into the overall story structure; however, one is left with the impression that someone involved with the book's production was embarrassed by the reception of the final episode and wanted to minimize its influence on the rest of the text. I would certainly hope that delaying publication gave the writers and editors adequate time to integrate this information--if they had wanted to do so. For better or for worse, this storyline is as much a part of LOST canon as anything else and it should have been treated as such.

Finally, there are several minor factual errors in the text--particularly with respect to the descriptions of the philosophers referenced by the show--but those are more nits to be picked than they are problems affecting the book's presentation. Nevertheless, it's an editor's job to pick those nits before publication.

Again, I'm glad to own the LOST encyclopedia and will readily admit that fans of the show (be they dedicated or casual ones) won't be able to find a better reference. The content is top-notch, covering both breadth and depth, as detailed in other reviews. If asked whether or not I would recommend that someone else spend $25 on it (much less the $45 cover price), however, I would only be able to answer that anyone considering doing so should take into account the very real possibility that an updated and cleaned-up new edition may be forthcoming. Of course, I also can't guarantee that any such edition will actually see the light of day. As such, I have no regrets on my part, but less risk-averse fans might think otherwise.

A good, if not definitive resource with some noticeable flaws
By Benjamin S. Lundy
The LOST Encyclopedia will not bring a bevy of new insights or craved "answers" for fans of the show, but it is a solid catalog of facts and histories from the show's vast mythology. I wouldn't call it comprehensive, but it's an enjoyably casual reference for fans of the show.

The biggest negative trait of the book is the sloppy editing. Despite being delayed multiple times before its release, the articles still contain numerous typographical errors (I'd estimate one every couple of pages on average), far more than should be acceptable for a professionally published work like this. There are even entries that are OUT OF ALPHABETICAL ORDER: under "D," there are three entries ordered "Donovan," "Dogen" and "Doctors." I know it's something most people won't lose a lot of sleep over, but as an English major I found them impossible to ignore and quite distracting from the flow of the book.

More important and germane to the nature of the LOST Encyclopedia, there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to the emphasis placed on some elements of the show in contrast to others. For example, on the same two-page spread, Eddie Colburn, a minor character featured in ONE flashback episode, is given as much attention as Edward Mars, a character who appeared in multiple flashbacks and on the Island. Another example: there's a massive two-page entry dedicated to the RECORD PLAYER in the Swan station. The same amount of space is given to the blast door map, one of the pivotal set pieces of the series. If I had to guess, I'd say that such decisions were made to make the articles fit into neat two-page layouts, with the visual presentation emphasized over the relevance of information.

As mentioned in a previous review, the alphabetization of the entries is slapdash. If you want to actually look up an obscure element of the show rather than just casually browse the book, you may find yourself taking several guesses on what your query may be titled before you find it. For example, if you want to look up the glowing river alternatively called "The Source" or "The Heart of the Island," you won't find it listed under either of those two names. Instead, it is mentioned in a brief paragraph in the massive entry "The Island," as well as intermittently in other entries. Other aspects of the show that this fan thinks should have entries but do not, based on their importance in the show, include the Whispers, Time Travel, and the Donkey Wheel.

Now, to the positive. Given the existence of the much more comprehensive fan wiki "Lostpedia," the biggest appeal of The LOST Encyclopedia is not the depth or organization of its entries. Instead, it is the hundreds and hundreds of visual aids that accompany the entries, along with photos of LOST props and locales sprinkled liberally throughout the book. All of the entries on the major Dharma stations feature original diagrams. There are hundreds of close-ups of key props, such as Faraday's journal and maps used by the characters, as well as more obscure pieces like Drive Shaft promotional posters and the contents of Kate's time capsule. Most fans have never had an opportunity to see such components of LOST lore this clearly and up close.

The encyclopedia also features a number of ancillary elements that exist outside of the show, thus establishing them as canon while also exposing them to fans who may not have seen them before. The entry for Alvar Hanso contains information about Thomas Mittlewerk and Rachel Blake, characters featured only in the LOST Alternate Reality Game "The LOST Experience." The article on the Purge includes a copy of the truce between the Others and the Dharma Initiative, previously available only to those who bought the special edition of the Season Five box set. There are even translations of many of the hieroglyphics featured on sets and props from the show, engravings that would be impossible to discern from screencaps.

Ironically, the unofficial Lostpedia easily remains the definitive source of information on LOST even after the release of this book. Really, The LOST Encyclopedia functions best as a kind of coffee table attraction, a tome to peruse for the sake of curiosity as opposed to a serious study of the show's mythology. While its numerous textual errors give some entries an unpolished feel, from a strictly visual perspective the book is stunning. It's not easy to produce as many new images from a show as heavily scrutinized as LOST, but the material unique to the book, as well as the conversational tone best suited to enjoyable casual reading, make it worth the buy.

No buts-this book is canon
By Maeve
I still highly recommend this book to anyone who loved Lost. If you want a gift for your favorite Lost fanatic, this is the only book you should consider buying. That is because this is the only book written with the help of the Lost producers. It is fact-canon. Other books may theorize what happened in the Lost world but this is the only book that tells you what did happen.

"No great depth" said the previous review! I was amazed at all the depth and details. Just a few examples: Jacob appreciated Widmore's loyalty and allowed him to rise to leadership with Eloise. Jacob had Alpert strip Widmore of his position and banish him. Danielle arrived on the island after the Purge. Ben planned to fool Juliet into releasing the gas from the Tempest killing herself, the 815 survivors and the freighter crew. Plus it confirms things we suspected like Widmore being the one to execute the Purge of the Dharma Initiative via gas from the Tempest and the one who told his goons to slaughter the Ajira 316 survivors.

There is very little on the flash-forwards. The 14 or so pages (text is limited to brief recaps) are tacked on the end of the book after the index like an afterthought. Given this is an encyclopedia there isn't much for the writers to say about them anyway but the placement is very odd.

Know what else is odd? Apparently the editors didn't show up for work! I found too many instances of misplaced and repeated text including this gem in a series of bullets about Shannon; "Loudly whined about Marshal Mars dying too callously." LOL! It is sooo annoying when someone dies callously! That probably should have been "Callously whined about Marshal Mars dying too loudly."

I also found overall that the text lacked clarity. Many paragraphs were poorly worded and clumsy. In places grammatical errors left the text unnecessarily ambiguous. It's obvious that neither the publisher nor the writers were up to the task of producing this book properly which is sad. Or perhaps the producers are at fault for not choosing writers who could produce clean text under a tight deadline.

I'm still giving it five stars because the book looks great (all 400 pages), it contains a mountain of information that is all canon (which no other Lost book can claim) and it is relatively cheap for all it contains. For all its faults, it still makes the best gift you can buy for any kind of Lost fan from the causal fan all the way up to the Lost fanatic.
