About the Author

Randy Jones was the original cowboy in The Village People. The band, perhaps best known for hits like Macho Man and Y.M.C.A, sold 50 million albums, earned 45 Gold and Platinum record certificates around the globe, performed in worldwide tours, starred in its own camp classic film, and made the cover of Rolling Stone. Since leaving the band in the early 1990s, Jones has continued a career of stage acting and music performance. Since 2004, he has starred with Cathy Rigby in the musical Meet Me in St. Louis and also starred in two stage musicals in New York City, Sodom & Gomorrah: The Musical and I Want to Be Rosie, about the life and career of Rosemary Clooney. He debuted his solo act in Trump's Taj Mahal in 2005, and in the fall of 2006 released his first solo album in 20 years.

Mark Bego is a professional writer who has authored 45 books involving rock n' roll and show business, with two New York Times bestsellers, a Los Angeles Times bestseller, and a Chicago Tribune bestseller. Bego's subjects have ranged from Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Madonna, The Monkees, and Bonnie Raitt, to Julia Roberts and Leonardo DiCaprio. Bego also authored the Rock & Roll Almanac published in 1996. He has written articles for People, US, Cosmopolitan, Celebrity, and Billboard, was Editor-in-Chief of Modern Screen magazine from 1983 to 1985, and Film Editor for country music's Twang magazine in 1996 and 1997.

About the Author
Before focusing his creative energies on fiction, Patrick Doughtie honed his artistic skills as a newspaperman, recording artist, and screenwriter. He was one of the youngest newspaper general managers in California when he and one of his four brothers decided to move to Nashville to pursue a music career. In 1996, after his son Tyler was born, Patrick left the late nights and long trips of the music world to start a construction business in Nashville. After his son’s death in 2005, he began his career as a screenwriter. Patrick has written five screenplays and two short-subject scripts in a variety of genres: comedy, drama, thriller, action, and a children’s story.

Tammie Lyon lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, with her husband, Lee, and loves spending the day in her studio with her dog, Gus. She discovered her love of illustrating at a very young age while drawing at the kitchen table with her dad. She began her career as a staff illustrator for a major greeting card company, eventually becoming the director of the juvenile product line. Since then Tammie has illustrated children’s books, posters, magazines, cd’s, games, clothing, and just about anything else you can think of.

Writing Letters to God

In Letters to God, written by Patrick and Heather Doughtie, Tyler can't find his compass in his messy room. He remembers his dad told him if he had a problem, he should talk to God about it. So Tyler says, "Hey, God, can you please help me find my compass." His room is still a mess and he still can't find his compass, so he decides to write God a letter asking for help.

Before he makes it to the mailbox to post his letter, he sees Mrs. Green trying to get her cat down from a tree. He opens his letter and adds a P.S. telling God Mrs. Green needs help, too.

Then, he finds his friend Sam sitting on the curb looking sad because her father lost his job. So, he adds a P.S.S. to the letter about Sam. When he sees a beautiful rainbow he adds a P.S.S.S. thanking God for it.

After posting his letter, Tyler finds Sam happily playing with her dad and Mrs. Green holding her act in her arms. He then writes a thank-you letter to God.

The illustrations by Tammie Lyon are colorful and expressive and sure to please young readers.

Stationary is included in the back of the book so your child can write his/her own letter to God.

What I Like: This book is based on a true story of Tyler Doughtie. When Tyler passed away at the age of nine after being diagnosed with a rare brain tumor, his father found letters Tyler had written to God when he was ill. This story, one of child-like faith, is one everyone can learn from.

What I Dislike: Nothing.

Great for everyone!

I absolutely love this book but more importantly my 2 year old really loves it. She has an older brother named Tyler so I think it's one more reason why she loves it. I am by no means religious and I probably would never have purchased this book but it was a gift to my children from a family friend that also attends my father's church. I am so glad we received this as a gift. It is one of the best books i've read my daughter to date and has a really sweet story. You don't have to be religious to appreciate this book.

Absolutely wonderful!

I have no idea why there aren't any reviews for this book yet. It is one of our favorite bedtime stories! My almost 2 year old daughter asks to read it at least twice a day. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with children. It teaches a great lesson and is a heartwarming story about the power of prayer. I can't wait to read the adult copy of Letters to God, we loved the movie!

"Yesterday We Were in America!" Imagine saying that at a cocktail party, or to your friends and neighbors--in 1919. This is in fact the phrase pilot Alcock kept repeating to the crew of the Marconi radio station near which he had landed, and who simply would not believe him until he produced as evidence a sealed mailbag from Newfoundland, his point of departure 1,880 miles back across the Atlantic. This is about as exotic a pronouncement as today saying "Yesterday We Were on Mars!" It was totally unprecedented. It had only been three weeks earlier that an Atlantic crossing by a US Navy flying boat, that in a pinch could have set down on the water and rendevoused with a rescue boat, had concluded--and that had taken 19 days of flying in short stages (for a total of 57:16 housrs in the air). And now Cpt John Alcock and Lt Arthur Whitten Brown had done a 1900-mile nonstop crossing from Newfoundland to Ireland, nonstop in 16 hours and in a rickety Vickers Vimy biplane at that.

We live in a world that has in the lifespan of one generation gone from horse-drawn buggy to putting a man on the moon and has seen everyday supersonic civilian air travel come and go. Been there, done that. But a newspaper reader in 1919 would have been overcome with excitement at the novelty of this flight--the longest distance traveled nonstop by man--in a world still new to mechanization in general and aviation in particular. (Recall that the war that had ended a year earlier--the Great War, World War One--had started with horses and ended with tanks!)

And excitement was generated again in 2005. Seeing the Vimy land in Ireland at the end of the reenactment of Alcock and Brown's 1919 flight by adventurers Steve Fossett and Mark Rebholtz inspired the author to write this book. Lynch tells an engaging story drawing from Alcock and Brown's own written records, contemporary news coverage, and from eyewitness accounts such as that of the one witness to the 1919 arrival in Ireland who is still alive. (He was seven years old at the time.) Early on Lynch threads the needle of what unlikely heroes these pioneers were so that the reader, at the end, having traveled the full arc, duly commiserates with their tragic end.

A good amount of background is established by recapping the exploits of balloonists, the Wright brothers, and the national sentiments and political stirrings that resulted in the issuance of a £10,000 (ca. £500,000 in today's money) challenge from the Daily Mail newspaper. Lynch explains the building of the Vimy at the Vickers plant located on the Brooklands racetrack grounds, and the dominance of the Rolls-Royce Eagle engines (#5244 and 5246 on the Alcock/Brown Vimy) that propelled all but one of the seven contenders for the prize money. (A peripheral but pertinent observation: Readers already familiar with aero engine development will know to dismiss the now debunked story retold here of the influence of the Mercedes engine on Eagle development. Everyone else is encouraged to bone up on this.)

The details of the flight itself will have you twitching in your chair. The story of the aftermath--knighthoods, international acclaim--casts a harsh light on the toll fame takes.

The photos, all b&w, are bundled into two sections. They show what needs to be shown but there is nothing new to the record here (not a criticism, just a fact). A Foreword by Len Deighton, an Appreciation by Steve Fossett, a map, a bibliography of books, a list of news sources (only by name and not specific issue/date or the like), and an index round out the book.

A Must Read For Every starting researcher in accounting

In eleven chapter and 241 pages, Malcolm Smith aims to provide an insider's view of the research process, by focusing on actual choices made in the conduct of accounting research projects, together with a realistic perception of what might go wrong, even with careful planning. The overall aim of the book is to facilitate the conduct of applied research studies in accounting. It takes a practical approach which takes the reader from initiating of the research idea, over developing the conceptual model, identifying theory and literature, developing a specification of hypotheses and collecting and analyzing to the ultimately publishing of the research findings.

The clearly defined structure and smooth writing style help to convey the message. It is furthermore very accessible due to its broad perspective and practical approach. The reader gets a clear overview of the sequence of steps that need to be undertaken to come to a successful publication. Throughout the book, he is made aware of potential pitfalls that he may encounter, and to some extent how to solve them. Practical examples illustrate the theory, making the whole more understandable. The main contribution the book makes to the reader is that it shows how to identify and define research problems and prepare strategies for their solution, how to review existing research and how to offer critiques of articles. In addition, ethical constraints on the conduct of accounting research are discussed.

There are however some drawbacks. A choice had to be made between a broad, extensive perspective and a detailed, intensive perspective. The author discusses for example the most frequently used statistical techniques, without really discussing solutions to statistical problems that may occur. Hence, the book may serve as a guideline to (starting) researchers, clarifying the several steps that need to be undertaken. Other, more specific, literature will however be needed to solve problem to concrete problems.

Penetrating insight; slightly sloppy execution

This is a really fascinating, well-done biography. Wilson treats the historical sources fairly, but focuses heavily on Seneca's own writings and the insight they offer into his psychology. In many parts, it reads more like literary analysis than history, but I don't think this is a bad thing: she does a great job highlighting the complexity and contradictions in his famously compartmentalized character.

Four stars only because I found it to be a frustrating read in parts. Wilson would have benefitted from a tighter editing job: the writing is verbose, and there are places where she seems to circle back to the same point she'd just made a page before without developing it any further. There's a lot of musing and meandering: sometimes she seems to be implying an argument, but backs away from actually making it. As a result, the end feels slightly anti-climactic: she passed many fascinating points along the way, but it doesn't all come together.

That said, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Seneca, or Roman history in general.

This book is terrific, awesome

This book is terrific, awesome, a masterpiece. Masterly written. It is a great addition to the standard books about Seneca's life, like the book Dying Every Day, because it goes way beyond just describing Seneca and his political adventures, but provides a lot of the details about philosophy, ancient history, and Seneca's family that is necessary to really understand the man (to the extent that he can be understood!). The book to me is written for people who want more than a political thriller, but one who really wants to understand the man and his times.

But even more valuable than the information is the writing, which is spectacular. Every paragraph you think to yourself, "The author is either a naturally gifted author, or someone who is willing to spend hours to craft the perfect paragraph." The book is really worth reading just for the writing, even if one has little interest in Seneca.

And I assure you, I have never even met Emily Wilson. Each word I say is sincere.

Emily Wilson gives a strong and smartly terse look at the life of Seneca, one of the most respected voices to come out of the Julio-Claudian era of the Roman empire.

Wilson's work here does a good job of introducing Seneca and his times. Though biographies can often settle too much on a general sense of what that period was like, Wilson quickly cuts to Seneca pure and simple. While never excluding the broader view of the society and politics Seneca played such a vital role within both as cultural contributor and his political influence, Seneca takes the chief role of this study as he should. Wilson avoids glib broad coverage of the times and places the man and his works front and center.

This can be a bit of a dry work. It is not a light look at a period or a man. It is a well written scholarly look at someone whose influence still reaches us today.

A master of design

Svoboda, who died in 2002, was one of the most innovative and influential stage designers of the 20th century. He designed more than 700 theatrical productions in his lifetime and founded the Czech school of theatrical performance known as Laterna Magica or Magic Lantern. He came to Western attention at the Brussels Expo of 1958, with "Laterna Magika," a production with director Alfred Radok that combined film, sound, light, mime and dance. His designs made extensive use of light to heighten dramatic effect -- he was quoted as saying, "Light is a material I love. You cannot create stage space without light." His scenography was sought for opera performances in New York's Metropolitan Opera, London's Covent Garden and La Scala in Milan. He continued working until his death, and revolutionizing stage lighting techniques with a combination of slide and film projections, laser beams and holograms.
This book has multiple pictures and sketches of groundplans and architecture for his early productions and is highly recommended as an introduction to the techniques and philosophy of a modern master of stagecraft.

Excellent book

Let me post a disclaimer first. I bought the paperback from MIT-press' website since it was cheaper after the edX discount.

Now the real deal : The book is excellent. It is the perfect companion to MIT's course on edX. I attended the course on a whim, since I already have a masters degree in computer engineer, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The book takes a beginner from the basics to some of the most important aspects of computer science. There is a bit of graph theory, a bit of statistics, a bit of sorting, linear regression, data plotting using Pylab, and even the knapsack problem thrown in. I loved the book as well as the course, and will readily recommend both to people interested in computer science, irrespective of the level of their expertise (there is something for everyone).

I have read bad reviews about the Kindle edition of this book and so I will add that a DRM free e-book is also available for purchase from MIT-press' website. If you want the ability to open your e-book with any PDF reader, buy that instead of the Kindle version.

Five Stars for Sure, but only 1/3 about Python, mostly Algorithms and how to handle computational complexity.

Bought this for the MIT Computer Science course 6.00.1x. It is a fast paced but very readable first year text for Computer Science. It uses Python 2.X as its language and you will come up to speed in Python quickly, and then spend the bulk of the book learning algorithms and computational techniques.

I am very pleased with the book. It is terse and fast. If you require a more leisurely pace, John Zelle's Python Programming, an Introduction to Computer Science takes 425 pages to cover what this book covers in 110 pages, and then has a short chapter just touching on what this book covers more deeply in the remaining 200 pages. Zelle's book is also a popular first year CS text, but obviously for a different audience. Obviously, you will learn more with this book if you can take the pace. I bought Zelle's book also and have used it for extra exercises and the occasional alternative explanation.

I also am using Problem Solving with Algorithms and Data Structures by Miller and Ranum to supplement/flesh out my algorithms knowledge during breaks in the class. This also seems to be a good book, and uses Python as its language for examples.

Buy Guttag for sure, or Zelle if you feel the need for a slower pace, and Miller and Ranum to flesh out your algorithms.

Too Much Prose

Taking the edX class. I thought this book would help and it does: it repeats the content of the class, but adds very little. My issue with the book is that: 1) It isn't easy to search. 2) It covers concepts too quickly - very little review. 3) Programming terminology is "bolded", but no glossary is provided at the back.

I recommend the book to those taking the edX class simply because it helps reduce note-taking. But if you are a beginner at programming and just looking for a book to start learning Python, I am sure there are better ones out there (i.e. clearer books that are a little more "hands-on"). I have enjoyed learning web related languages with Sitepoint and O'reilly books, so I'll probably look into getting one of those to deepen my understanding of Python.
