Another scrutinizes the controversy that followed the 1998 selection of a Miss Navajo Nation who had an African American father. A historian examines the status of Afro-Indians in colonial Mexico, and an ethnographer reflects on oral histories gathered from Afro-Choctaws. Crossing Waters, Crossing Worlds includes evocative readings of several of Toni Morrison’s novels, interpretations of plays by African American and First Nations playwrights, an original short story by Roberta J. Hill, and an interview with the Creek poet and musician Joy Harjo. The Native American scholar Robert Warrior develops a theoretical model for comparative work through an analysis of black and Native intellectual production. In his afterword, he reflects on the importance of the critical project advanced by this volume.

About the Author
Snorri Gudmundsson, Department of Aerospace Engineering, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. From 1995-2009, Dr. Gudmundsson served as Manager of Aerodynamics Engineering at Cirrus Design Corporation. He has performed testing, analysis, and performance analysis review on variety of single and twin engine small aircraft. He is also a Consulting Designated Engineering Representative for the FAA as a Structural and Flight Analyst.

Nice compilation of current aircraft design data

This is a fantastic compilation of current information on pretty much all aspects of light aircraft design - including cost modeling and the Eastlake cost model - both very hard to find in conventional sources for airplane design. I may write another review after more time with the text, but it looks thorough, with numerous examples. review qualification: I am a 15+ year professional aircraft design engineer

One complaint: After some debate, I bought the hard copy because I like physical books, but found out too late that they printed only in black and white! The online version has very nice colour illustrations.

Excellent resource of current design philosophies

My company acquired this book a couple of weeks ago, long enough for me to become fairly familiar with its layout and structure. In short: This is a top-notch book, very thorough, well-organized, and extremely useful. I agree with one of the other reviewers - I too think it is going to become a classic. I base this opinion on the following:

(1) It is thoroughly referenced.
(2) It focuses on one class of aircraft (GA) rather than attempting to serve all categories. This results in depth rather than breadth of information.
(3) It provides detailed derivations of most equations. This is rare in design books, but for practicing engineers like me, it is valuable because I constantly wonder from where this or that particular equation came.
(4) It provides tools not found in any other design book. For instance, the Eastlake cost model and the Petty equation (which allows modeling of piston engines using RPM and MAP which is great for flight simulation and performance analysis work). It also provides methods to create realistic models of drag coefficients at high AOAs and propeller thrust at low airspeeds. These methods, to my knowledge, cannot be found in any other design book. In my opinion, only one of these justifies owning the book, let alone all four of them.

One final comment, while I too prefer color over grayscale, the content is far more valuable to me, so it's not an issue. I usually find it unfair to rate books based on design rather than content. It really only punishes authors for the printed version of their books, something for which I can't imagine they are responsible. That aside, grayscale renders the book less expensive, something I'm sure college students will appreciate. I think any aerospace/aeronautical engineer worth their salt should have a copy in their library.

The General Aviation Aircraft Design Reference

I am an aerospace engineer with 20 years experience in aviation and it has been refreshing for me to find the General Aviation aircraft Design: Applied methods and Procedures book. The book of Snorri Gudmundsson is the most complete one related to General aviation design. Its step-by-step methodology and the derivation of the equations allow for a better understanding of the maths behind the physics. As a handbook it helps the engineer to quickly have an estimate of various design parameters. If you are planning an external modification to your aircraft, you will find the guidelines to reverse engineered the drag characteristics of the aircraft and then estimate the new performances. In his book Snorri Gudmundsson pay attention to the details and provide data and references on all topics of the design process.
A lot of my design books will from now be covered with dust and I am sure that this book and his author will become a classic as the Bruhn can be for aerospace structure, and the Torenbeek for airliner design.
One negative point on the book is its size, but with the amount of information provided it couldn’t be an other way. Travelling a lot I have invested in the eBook version, which on top of allowing to have this reference book with me all the time, bring colour to the graphs.

I just found this book at a local music store. If I'd discovered it on Amazon, I would have bought it there. It is written with real music scores and bass (guitar) TAB underneath. Extremely logical and thorough, beginning with basic notes and runs, ending with encyclopedia of scales. Very very well written and logical. Loaded with information - I will be able to continue with Jazz studies in "The Evolving Bassist" after I learn this book ! Much more information, methodically presented than other method books I looked at.

Good Information, a Few Flaws : A Teacher's Perspective

I really love the time and attention to detail that went into creating this book for advancing players. There are a few outright errors and some glaring typos (hence 4 stars), but on the whole, this book is full of good information.

Jerry Moore aims in this book to teach you how to make your own chord melody solos without teaching you much music theory or relying on traditional notation. As a player with a master's degree in music composition, I personally don't understand why anyone wouldn't want to read music (the system we have has had hundreds of years to develop and is the simplest/quickest way to transmit the musical information of pitch and rhythm), but I know there are those out there that don't want to touch it, and this book is for you.

Moore notates all the songs in this book with chord diagrams. I personally find a chord diagram for every note to be a little cumbersome, but for teaching the concept of a chord melody solo I can see the advantages - primarily that of designating fingerings on chords with added melody notes. The biggest drawback of the system is that you must know the timing for the songs in this book, as there is no mention of rhythm or attempt to notate it.

So, why four stars if I'm so put out by a 'chord diagram' method? Well, because this book will get you past the 5th fret, playing the higher inversions of all the common ukulele chords. Moore begins the book with a series of charts that are simply wonderful, charting all the common chords with inversions up to the 12th fret. Having it laid out so simply before you makes it easy to practice these inversions.

I've seen a chart of all the individual notes that can be found on the ukulele fretboard before (which can frankly be a bit overwhelming), but Moore gives you a seperate chart for each note, which is really cool (there is a mistake on the Bb/A# chart that leads you to believe it is notated traditionally where Ab/G# is, oh well). Yes, it takes up a few pages, but it makes it very clear and gives you something to practice rather than just a reference source.

The next set of charts help you transpose music from one instrument to another, offering common chord progressions side by side with charts for guitar, c ukulele, d ukulele and g ukulele (baritone). Useful.

Another set of charts shows clearly the concept of 8 moveable chord formations (4 major chord formations & 4 dominant 7th formations). Another useful reference.

Now that you know all the chord inversions and the various places to find all twelve notes on the fretboard, you're ready to start the process of making chord melody solos. I've often complained that certain author's 'methods' are not methodical at all, but Moore is ultra-methodical; he outlines every step of the process, really more than I needed (as a composer), but I can see the value for someone who does not have my background. Sometimes I feel things could be expedited/quickened up with the use of some traditional notation, but the chord diagramming is Moore's method and it does work to illustrate this type of soloing.

At the end, there is a nod to tablature, which I think is a less cumbersome way of notating a song without using a staff, but as I said before, you're then left without fingerings, unless you use the two together.

Anyway, I feel I got a keeper just for the awesome charts and reference materials.

Much ado about nothing

I bought this book after reading so many rave reviews about it. I really don't understand why it got so many because it is not a good book to teach anyone to play chord melody. What the book does for you however, is give you some of the best chord charts I have found. If you want to know where to find all the possibilities for chords and the fingering then this book covers more than you will ever need. The CD is useless. He rushes through every song whether it should be fast or slow and he doesn't explain anything. There is no way to keep up or even understand what he is playing because it is not in the book the way he is playing it. He doesn't explain that either. To be honest, I didn't even like his playing. Just because you can find chords all the way up and down the neck of the uke, doesn't mean you should use them. None of the songs were written so they could be played in the way I was expecting to be able to play them. What was I expecting? I was expecting to improve my ability to play song melodies using the chords and single notes on more than just the first 5 frets and to understand how to add simple embellishments where there is blank space between phrases. When to strum to maintain a rhythm, etc. I do not want to be a professional, I just want to be able to play songs that are pleasant to hear and at a decent tempo and I want to do it correctly. I have played and taught piano for 50 years I also play the hammered dulcimer and the autoharp, so I know notes and chord theory. I do not recommend this book.

great for any one learning fretted insturment

This is a great book, if your looking to learn to play a fretted instrument this is the book for you. you can use this book with banjo uke or guitar the information is all there. Although written for the uke you can use the info for other instruments as well. best instructional book I have ever purchased.
