There's meat on that bone!

I can usually read a book within a matter of hours, but this book bestowed on me four days of literary gold, which I will treasure again and again in times to come. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of savouring and mellowing in this remarkable journey down memory lane. A solid tale of first-hand experiences as told by Craig - of the people, of the land and of the wildlife. I can't do this book proper justice in a mere review, because that is like trying to describe your favourite dish to an extra-terrestrial alien. You need to taste its full flavoursome zest for yourself, by simply reading it. It relates in well chosen, and often vernacular words an outstanding and genuine account of Rhodesia; with all the best of Rhodie good-humour and self-deprecation. I am sure this book will be used as a lesson in history of what our lives and our country was like. This is a book by a Rhodesian, of Rhodesia, for Rhodesians...

The fall of a great nation.

This is a rating from the perspective of a Rhodesian who grew up in that country, fought the war (in the same RLI where Craig was), was wounded seriously in the war, and eventually after the main land grab was over, could take Robert Mugabe and his antics no more so reluctantly left. It is still "home", but not under the current regime. I am now a South African citizen. I can so relate to Craig's tales and his life. It is written in a way that Rhodesian s understand. I totally enjoyed the read. Thank you Craig for the memories. For those who do not know Rhodesia, this book will give you an accurate insider view of the transition from bread basket to begging bowl.

A thoroughly entertaining story

In his autobiography, Cut to the Bone, renowned wildlife artist, Craig Bone, delivers a thoroughly entertaining story of his life as a schoolboy, policeman, soldier, farmer, and friend of the environment in Rhodesia–turned Zimbabwe. To anyone who grew up there, his descriptions of the country’s flora, fauna, sights, sounds, and local figures of speech will evoke countless memories. I found the narrative tended to drag at times. The book’s 18 chapters, rather than being in chronological order, each focus on a particular subject area. Because of this, transitions were sometimes jarring and overall, the format led to the unnecessary retelling of certain incidents. Nonetheless, Craig’s readers will revel in his rascally sense of humor and either chuckle or take umbrage at his outlandish antics. Book review by Diana M.
