Convicting yet comforting in Christ'S completed work

I read several books on being a Christian husband and/or dad but this one nails it. It exegetically shows the reader his responsibility as a man while continually reinforcing faith in the completed work of the only true mediator between God and man, Jesus Christ. Buy this, read it, and apply it.

Waldron is wrong: all believers in Christ share in the priesthood of all believers

Waldron bases his arguments only on the OT and his arguments are rather weak even so. In the New Testament there is ZERO mention of a man being priest in his home. On the contrary, it clearly states that we as believers in Christ all share in the priesthoold of all believers (1 Peter 2:5). And our only mediator is the Lord Jesus Christ. "For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all." (1 Tim. 2:5-6)
So, Christ is our High Priest and mediator, and no other man can be so. Any man, any husband, who claims he is the priest in his home is likely to be a bully — and is certainly a heretic because he is claiming a role that only the Lord has.

Outstanding Book

In A Man as Priest in His Home, Samuel Waldron provides the reader with a short book detailing the man's ministry in the home. The book is just under 100 pages and divided into 10 chapters, making it a book that can be read through in one sitting, or read a chapter at a time with pause for thought and reflection. It's size makes it a wonderful reference to be able to read and re-read.
I have read a lot of books on the subject of the man's role in the home, and many of them have been rather large works. At first glance I wondered how much information could be contained in just 97 pages. I have read other works by Waldron, so I did not doubt the content would be very beneficial, but I must say that I was blown away by how helpful this book was in defining the man's role as priest in his home as well as giving practical application to help the reader along.
In Chapter 1 Waldron lays out the biblical foundation for the priestly ministry of believers and gives five practical aspects of that ministry from Hebrews 4:14-5:3. From this foundation Waldron moves seamlessly into the Scriptural warrant for the man's priestly ministry in his home. He gives "five special roles of the priest of Israel" that "line up nicely with the roles a man should play in his home." They are "intercessors in prayer, communicators of blessings, directors of worship, instructors in Scripture, and judges in holy things." Waldron will unpack these one at a time in Chapters 4-8. Just in case we look at this list and then turn in our own strength and try to perform these duties with our power Waldron reminds us that "we need a priest to minister to us because in ourselves we are condemned, defiled and excluded from God's presence.... Christ is our only hope." He is our hope for salvation, and He is also our hope if we are going to succeed in the role as priest in our home as God calls us to be. It is important to note that every time in this book that Waldron hits the reader with a seemingly impossible task to perform in our own strength he immediately points us to Christ as the one who will provide that strength.
In Chapter 3 Waldron gives us a portrait of Job as priest in his family. Job's example is then used in the chapters that follow, along with other examples to draw out truths from Scripture regarding the five roles of the man as priest in the home. Chapters 4-8 really provide the meat of the book. Without going through every truth that is covered I will say that each chapter presents its own challenges to the man as the priest of his home. I received both encouragement for the things that by God's grace I do well, and also rebuke and challenge to change my thinking and actions in the areas where I fall short.
I was truly blessed by this book, and I'm very thankful for the work that Samuel Waldron put into it. By God's grace I desire to fulfill my role as priest to my family, and Samuel Waldron has provided a helpful book as guidance. I highly recommend this book to all men.
